Industry job application support for academics

Many of us went straight into academia from school. We’ve devoted our lives to learning the ins and outs of papers, bios, conferences, teaching, teaching portfolios, grant applications, how to speak to our professors, how to network with that other professor whom you’d really love to work with (or escape), CVs, grading…

So what happens when we change our minds?

Many of us have had no experience applying for work outside the world of academia. We apply for industry positions we know we can do in our sleep, but hear crickets.

You’re not hearing nothing because you’re not qualified. It’s because you don’t know how to speak the language.

Remember what it was like learning the academic lingo? The difference between an assistant and associate professor? Industry job applications are the same. In order to demonstrate what we can do, we need to be legible to hiring managers. So that means no niche vocabulary, and no long-winded qualifications, and definitely no resumes over one page.

Far too many academics think that they can copy-paste their CVs into a resume and land an industry position.

I spent two years working in the University of Chicago’s career office, and have supported both students and faculty as they transitioned into their new lives. I know how overwhelming it is to be transitioning out of a career path that you’ve spent so many years dedicating yourself to. I want to make this process as easy and affordable for you as possible.
